George, adopted by a middle-class white American family, spent his early years shielded from the broader socio-economic and racial challenges facing those outside his circle. Encouraged by his father to pursue a business degree and network within corporate circles, he was poised for a conventional life. However, after earning a degree in Creative Writing from Northwestern University and joining Teach for America, George taught seventh-grade reading in West Baltimore, an experience that removed the filters from his eyes regarding poverty and racial inequities. This, coupled with his time teaching in Monteverde, Costa Rica, broadened his perspective on global disparities and the universal needs for safety, recognition, and respect. Returning to the US to work in a family business in Asheville, North Carolina, he eventually became Chair for the Asheville City Schools board of education. George's journey from potential corporate conformity to educational advocacy reflects a commitment to challenging traditional power dynamics and underscores his belief in transformative change within the educational system post-COVID.
